Do staffing agencies take a cut of my pay?

No, and any agency that does isn't one you should work with. Here's how it actually works: we agree your pay rate with you first, then quote the employer a higher bill rate. The difference covers employer taxes, insurance, and our service. It's paid by the client on top of your rate, not out of it. Your rate is your rate.

How does temp-to-hire work from my side?

You start on assignment as our employee. If you and the client both want to make it permanent, they pay us a conversion fee (never out of your pay) and you become their employee, usually with benefits and often a raise. You'll never be blocked from a permanent offer: the path is designed for it.

Should I sign up with more than one staffing agency?

Honestly? It can make sense. Different agencies have different client lists. Two things to manage: tell each agency who has already submitted you where (duplicate submissions hurt your candidacy), and judge each agency by whether they actually know their clients or are just forwarding resumes. We'd rather be one of two agencies you trust than pretend exclusivity protects you.
