The purpose of a job interview is for the hiring manager to determine if they want to hire you, obviously. Here’s a simple breakdown of what most hiring managers look for during an interview that will effect their decision. Take these questions into consideration on your next job interview.
Can you succeed in this job?
This is the most obvious thing that hiring managers search for. Your ability to preform the essential duties of the job will be determined based on your skill set, past experience, and how you sell yourself. Make sure that you review your resume multiple times before your job to ensure that you don’t leave anything out that needs to be brought to the hiring managers attention.
How’s your attitude?
The hiring manager will be analyzing how you present yourself and how you speak about yourself to determine what attitude you will be bringing to the company. They are searching for someone who is optimistic about their future and confident in their ability. Show them that you have that attitude in the way you speak and the way you listen.
Do you actually want this job?
A hiring manger is very unlikely to move forward with a candidate that seems like they don’t truly want the job or have other more appealing options. Be sure that you express your desire for the position but don’t go so far as to make yourself seem desperate, or that you will take anything that comes your way. Show the hiring manager that your skill set and employment history has led you to this job and that you are confident that this position will benefit you and the company.
How do you compare to other candidates for this position?
This point is more so out of your control as you have no way of actually knowing how you compare to the other interviewees. Be prepared for your interview, show your confidence, and prove to the hiring manager that selecting you is a good choice. Doing this will ensure that you stand up well in the crowd.
At the end of your interview, the things that will stand out best to the hiring manager will be your motivation and ability to preform the job. Remember to go in to every interview with your head held high and ready to prove that you are the best choice.
